Q&A on How to Differentiate Soapberry

Q1: Can the pure extract of soapberry decorate iodine?

A: From the technical point of view, when iodine becomes colorless iodide, we termed this as ¡§reduction¡¨. In other words, so long as you understand the principle of chemical change for iodine, adding a certain proportion of reducing agent, you will be able to produce a chemical magic ¡V iodine decolorization! However, what sort of reducing agent is required to achieve such effect? As far as I know, they include the following: stannous chloride, sodium thiosulfate, glucose, vitamin C, enzymes, lemon juice, citric acid, lemon oil, soapberry¡¦s saponin and L¡VAscorbic Acid.
For a soapberry, its saponin is the most click of all parts. In other words, it is the most concentrated essence of a soapberry obtained from the after-extraction process. What do you think the color of a soapberry is when it is ripe? Brown or coffee, as you may see! Saponin comes mainly from the flesh and the pericarp of soapberry, therefore, the color of the best quality soapberry is likely to range from light brown to coffee color. As for those ¡§semi-transparent¡¨ soapberry products available in the market which people claimed that they are ¡§the decolorization of soap produced by the latest technology¡¨, are they really pure enough? Well, let¡¦s put that open to question!
As we know, the most common practice is to soak the entire soapberry into diluted iodine (iodine mixed with water), and you¡¦ll soon see the brownish yellow liquid ¡§returns to its whiteness¡¨. Actually, this is none but the effect of saponin. Furthermore, because the pericarp itself has a layer of membrane, the brown pigment therefore is unable to blend into the diluted iodine liquid, and thus, the brownish yellow liquid can return to its whiteness. However, the result would be entirely different if you used saponin extractant for experiment: the moment saponin extractant decolorizes the brownish yellow liquid, the brown colored pigment will blend with the diluted solution simultaneously, and the decolorizing liquid will become yellowish at once. Therefore, the gimmick of enabling the diluted iodine solution to ¡§return to its whiteness¡¨ is meaningless; other than proving the effect of the saponin itself, it is not capable of bringing any confirmation to their products at all. For if the soapberry is of the top quality, then, the act of proving the simultaneous decolorization and pigmentation is somehow superfluous!

Q2: What does saponin consist of?

A: Saponin consists of enzyme, glucose, vitamins C, brown colored active pharmacodynamic element and so on.

Q3. What¡¦s going on with the so-called ¡§Decolorized Soapberry products manufactured by using the latest technology¡¨

A: Colorless or transparent soapberry products are very commonly seen especially in the food market or even in those mobile or temporary stalls. We do not know the proportion of the saponin in these products, but let¡¦s consider: Currently, is there any technology available that is capable of decolorizing coffee-color? (Kindly be noted that all ripe soapberries are coffee in color). If the answer is yes, then we would be seeing ¡§colorless coffee¡¨, for many people love drinking coffee and colorless coffee would obviously be something new and fascinating. If not, then it could be due to two reasons. First, it¡¦s likely that the company is unable to produce saponin due to its immature manufacturing technique, and as a result, his products are either transparent or semi-transparent. If this is not the reason, then the latter would be even more scurvier, meaning that these people are attempting to blind the consumers by using chemical synthesis cleaner or soapy water modulation or adding only very small portion of saponin into their products. To be more precise, they are trying to fool the consumers by using cheap chemical raw materials yet selling the low quality products as high quality products. To sell low quality products for high prices is actually the result of short-sightedness and craving for profits. However, those who do that can never sustain their business, and at the same time, they would only bring chaos and confusion to the market of soapberry¡¦s products. By hiding one¡¦s conscience for the sake of money, aren¡¦t they afraid of retribution?

Q4: Is the ¡§Burning Identification Technique¡¨ as used by certain manufacturers genuine?

A: First of all, let us explain the most common trick used by some of the manufacturers in the market. Normally, they will place a small amount of their product on a stainless steel spoon and burn it with small fire. Once the water is dried off, the spoon is left with what is so-called yellowish ¡§soapberry oil¡¨. When you mixed it with water, it will restore to its original form immediately. And this ¡§yellowish soapberry oil¡¨ is actually none but the synthetic chemical cleansing agents ¡V Nenylphenol Polyethoxulates, or NPEO in short. What will happen then when burning the saponin? Or rather, how will it react? When you place a small portion of coffee-color soapberry liquid on a stainless steel spoon and burn it with small fire, when the water boils, you¡¦ll see plenty of bubbles. When you continue burning it until the water evaporates conpletely, the remnants will gradually turn to deep black and will give a smell of caramel flavor. Ultimately, the remnant will catch fire and become black residue. Reaching this state, you can only use brushes to clear away the stain. And this should be the right incendiary identification technique for testing the genuineness of soapberry products.

Q5: What is the PH value of Soapberry?

A: The PH value of soapberry is ranged from3.8 to 5.1, which is almost the same value to that of human¡¦s skin. For this reason, soapberry products are very mild to our skin. Therefore, consumers can simply test the purity of the soapberry products by using the pH paper.

Q6: Can soapberry be eaten? How does it taste like?

A: As recorded on the Compedium of Materia Medica, the taste of soapberry¡¦s flesh is bitter. Its seed is the only edible portion. However, all cleansing products are made from its flesh. Q8: Is there any simple way to detect a chemical substance existed in the soapberry product?

A: Sure. What you need are a container, some plain water, cooling oil, and the products required for the test. Kindly be noted that the water, cooking oil and the tested product must be of the same proportion. Let¡¦s take the cooling oil for experiment. First, pour in some water follow by the cooling oil and then the dish cleanser. Gently mixed them with your hand and you¡¦ll soon see the formation of white colored sticky stuffs, and those are actually the outcome of the chemical synthesis interface and the cooling oil. So long as a product is added with such chemical synthesis interface active agent, the use of this simple, convenient and cheap method will provide you with an immediate result.
